SOLVA • PEMBROKESHIRE
THE LOCAL AREA
Solva is a very picturesque harbour village with several pubs and restaurants all within reasonable walking distance of the cottage. It also has a couple of interesting shops including a local artist who sells his work of the surrounding areas.
In Upper Solva there is a small grocery/post office which is good for all the essentials.
The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path is literally only 5 minutes away from the cottage and it is lovely to walk down to the harbour to have a coffee and watch the world go by or go crab fishing from the harbour wall. You can also use the coastal path to explore the beautiful rugged coastline, where you will find many varieties of bird including Skylarks and Peregrine falcons as well as viewing Seals in the bays below.
To the south of Solva is the more populated part of Pembrokeshire with the larger towns such as Haverfordwest, Milford, Pembroke, Tenby and Saundersfoot. Here you will find shopping a plenty as well as many historical landmarks such as Pembroke Castle (where the Tudor dynasty was founded – Henry VII born here).
Also to the south are the wide open beaches of Broad Haven and Newgale, although there are also some nooks and crannies not widely known which always have plenty of room even in the height of summer.
Immediately north of Solva is St Davids – the smallest city in Britain. Here you will find lots of small independent shops, art galleries and delicatessens and restaurants/cafes. Here too is the magnificent Cathedral and Bishops Palace which is a must for exploring.
Surfing is a popular past time around here and in St Davids you can book to have lessons or alternative sports – coast steering, sea kayaking or rock climbing. In St Davids you can also book boat trips to the bird sanctuary of Ramsey or seal and whale & dolphin watching.
The north coastline is much quieter and more rural but again there are many bays and beaches to explore – some with pubs or tea shops. It is a beautiful rugged coastline very reminiscent of Cornwall – without the crowds.
